ABOUT ZIRCON SAND MINING
Located in Charlton and Brantley Counties, Georgia is an ancient beach sand deposit (Deposit Formation) which contains economic quantities of zircon sand. SII intends to utilize an environmentally friendly mining process to extract zircon sand with minimal land impacts and speedy reclamation.
SII is currently seeking permits to mine. The proposed mine will produce approximately 13,000 tons of zircon per year disturbing roughly 120 acres annually (What is Mined and Where). The zirconium ore product will be shipped off site for further processing. This ore will be a critical domestic source of zirconium for applications in the national defense, medical and consumer products industries (See: Zirconium Uses). Currently, nearly 100% of our domestic supply of zirconium source materials comes from foreign countries, principally China.
SII is working closely with state and local stakeholders, including legislators, regulators, community advocacy and conservancy groups during the initial exploratory phase (See: Environmental Conservation and Permitting). Area wetlands, flow ways, tributaries and special habitats will be protected to the maximum extent possible. Any permitted disruption of local ecosystems will be temporary and approved by the appropriate regulatory agencies and quickly returned to their pristine condition.
